Description

On September 14, 2023, an incident occurred inside a police station lobby involving a man identified as Keishaun Sims. According to reports, Sims walked into the lobby and approached the officer working at the front desk, asking if he could speak with a “manager.”

Body-worn camera footage shows the officer explaining that Sims would need to schedule an appointment if he wanted to speak with the police chief or another official. Instead of leaving, Sims continued speaking about what he described as a “manifestation.”

After several more comments, the officer stood up, walked into the lobby area, and asked Sims to leave the building.

Moments later, a physical altercation broke out. Sims allegedly knocked the officer to the ground and pinned him down until two additional officers rushed in and placed Sims in handcuffs.

Police later stated that the department is reviewing the incident and considering additional training for officers to improve de-escalation in similar situations.

Following the incident, Sims was charged with:
 • Aggravated robbery (first-degree felony)
 • Two counts of assault on a police officer (fourth-degree felonies)
 • Resisting arrest (misdemeanor)
 • Obstructing official business (misdemeanor)
