It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At 8:52 PM on July 16, 2024, Deputy Matthew Levier from the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office noticed a 2021 Volkswagen Atlas speeding at 82 MPH in a 60 MPH zone on Highway 90, close to Pepper Tree Road. He decided to pull the car over, and the driver stopped near Dingo Road. When Deputy Levier and Deputy Casey approached her, they realized the driver, who was later identified as Rachel, showed signs of being impaired. Rachel insisted she was not driving 82 MPH and tried to contact her lawyer several times. Deputy Levier, suspecting she might be impaired, asked Rachel to step out of her car. Other deputies arrived to help with the traffic stop. Eventually, Rachel left the vehicle and agreed to take field sobriety tests. Deputy Levier began the assessment with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. He noted all six signs of impairment and spotted slight vertical eye movement. Next, they moved to the Walk and Turn test. Rachel struggled with this exercise, failing to keep her heels and toes together and showing poor balance. Other tests were not carried out due to her unwillingness to cooperate. Rachel was arrested for driving under the influence after her erratic driving caught the attention of officers. They noticed the smell of alcohol on her breath and observed she struggled to complete field sobriety tests. When deputies searched her vehicle, they found a firearm inside. Deputy Levier transported Rachel to the Santa Rosa County Jail, while someone else was called to look after her dog. In the Santa Rosa County Jail, Rachel consented to provide breath samples. The results from the Intoxilyzer showed her blood alcohol content was 0.26% and 0.262%. These figures were more than three times the legal limit of 0.08%. As a result, Rachel was charged with driving under the influence and received a speeding warning.
