It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: It was nearly 1:00 AM on July 26, 2024. Highland Park Police Sergeant Adalberto Pacheco noticed a white Kia Sorento. The 2022 vehicle moved east on Raritan Avenue. Its headlights were off. Sergeant Pacheco turned on his emergency lights. He wanted the Kia to stop. The Kia kept going east. It turned onto Woodbridge Avenue. Finally, it stopped near Volkert Street. Pacheco walked up to the passenger side. He spoke with the driver, Alyssa. During his conversation with Alyssa, a scent of alcohol wafted over him. He also noticed more signs that suggested she was not sober. Alyssa mentioned she was driving home after collecting her passenger from a New Brunswick bar. Suspecting she was impaired, Sergeant Pacheco requested Officer Alexander Triana's presence. He wanted him to conduct field sobriety tests. When Officer Triana arrived, Alyssa was asked to step out. She was then instructed to perform the exercises. Officer Triana led her to the Krauszer’s lot on Woodbridge Avenue. There, she would do field sobriety exercises. First, he did the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During this test, he saw issues. Her eyes lacked smooth pursuit. He noted nystagmus at maximum deviation and before 45 degrees. Vertical gaze nystagmus was not seen. Next was the Walk and Turn test. Alyssa failed to touch heel-to-toe and turned the wrong way. The last test was the One Leg Stand. She could not raise her foot right. Also, she put her foot down too soon. Alyssa's driving was all over the place. The smell of booze filled the air. She even said she had been drinking. Alyssa failed the roadside tests. She was arrested for drunk driving. Her car was towed per John's Law. Officer Triana took Alyssa to the station. Officer Samson stayed behind. He waited for the tow truck from Dependable Motors. At the station, Alyssa heard her rights. She agreed to a breath test. The test showed a BAC of 0.176%. That's twice the legal limit. Alyssa's brother picked her up. He signed a warning about her actions. Sergeant Pacheco gave Alyssa three tickets.
