It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: On March 24, 2024, at around 12:22 AM, Berkeley Township Police officers were called to a car accident. The crash had damaged a retaining wall in front of the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals. Patrolman Evan Sicknick approached the driver of a 2019 Honda that hit the wall. The 25-year-old driver was identified as Ana. As he talked to Ana and watched her get into the ambulance, he noticed signs that she might be impaired. Ana mentioned she was coming home from MJ’s, a well-known bar in Bayville, and admitted to drinking before driving. The first responders assessed her condition, but she expressed that she did not want to go to the hospital. After she turned down further medical help, Sergeant Varady asked Patrolman Sicknick to perform field sobriety tests because he had seen signs of impairment in her eyes. Patrolman Sicknick began by having Ana take the Walk and Turn test. During this test, she did not touch heel-to-toe with each step and took too many steps. Next came the One Leg Stand test. Ana struggled to lift her foot correctly and almost lost her balance. Concerned for her safety, Sergeant Varady chose to stop the tests. After the traffic accident, Ana showed signs of being impaired. She struggled to complete the sobriety tests and was arrested for driving under the influence. Patrolman Sicknick took her to the Berkeley Township Police Department for processing. He read her the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators, and at first, she agreed to take breath tests. However, Ana vomited on the floor, forcing the officers to restart the 20-minute observation many times because she kept spitting. Eventually, she refused to provide breath samples, leading to additional charges for that refusal. Once the officers finished their work with her, she was handed over to her father. He signed a form about potential liability before she left. Patrolman Sicknick then gave her several traffic tickets.
