It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: Patrolman Randy Yevchak responded to a crash on May 11, 2024, around 6:05 AM. The West Milford Police got a call about a car hitting the Canistear Road Trestle. When the officer arrived, a tow truck was already present. A 2011 Honda Accord had major damage to its front end. The airbags had gone off inside. Alexis, the 21-year-old driver, explained what happened. She said she was going south on Canistear Road toward State Route 23. Her car hit the trestle on the driver's side. The crash caused so much damage, the car could not be driven. Patrolman Yevchak spoke with Alexis and smelled alcohol. He saw other signs she was impaired. He asked Alexis for her license. Yevchak went to his car to fill out a CrashDocs card. He asked his boss if he could give Alexis a ride. Then, he saw a bulge in her sweatshirt. It looked like she was hiding something. A search found a mostly empty bottle of Smirnoff Vodka. Alexis was asked to do sobriety tests, due to a suspicion of impairment. Patrolman Yevchak began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. He watched Alexis' eyes. They did not move smoothly. Her eyes jerked at the extreme side. The jerking started before 45 degrees. He also saw vertical gaze nystagmus. This showed high impairment. Next was the Walk and Turn test. Alexis failed to touch heel to toe. She also took the wrong number of steps. The One Leg Stand test came next. Alexis could not raise her foot right. She put her foot down many times. The last test was the Modified Romberg. She thought 30 seconds passed in 33 seconds. The scene unfolded after a car crash. Alexis smelled of alcohol and struggled with sobriety tests. Because of this, she was arrested for drunk driving. John’s Law required her car to be impounded for 12 hours. Patrolman Yevchak handcuffed Alexis. He first took her to Bloomingdale Police. The breathalyzer at West Milford Police was broken. Alexis was at the Bloomingdale Police Department. Officers read her the Standard Statement. She agreed to give breath samples. The Alcotest showed a BAC of 0.18%. This was more than double the 0.08% legal limit. After processing, they took Alexis back to West Milford. There, they processed her again. Alexis's grandmother signed a form. It warned of possible liability. Alexis was then released to her. Patrolman Yevchak gave her four summonses. These included driving under the influence and reckless driving.
