It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: Officer Joseph Gioia patrolled Ocean Avenue on April 15, 2024. It was 3:06 AM. He saw a 2007 Ford Fusion speeding north. The car went 54 MPH in a 40 MPH zone. Gioia followed the Fusion. The driver swerved and could not stay in the lane. Gioia turned on his lights to stop the car. The driver stopped on Main Avenue in Bay Head. Gioia told dispatch he was stopping the car. The driver was Gigi. He got close to Gigi and smelled alcohol. He asked Gigi for her driver's license and car papers. She gave them to him without a problem. Gigi told Officer Gioia she was driving home from her job in Seaside. Officer Gargaloni came to help. Because he thought Gigi seemed drunk, he had her do some tests. These tests would show if she was okay to drive. The tests began with Gigi reciting the alphabet, which she did well. Next came the One Leg Stand. Gigi struggled; she failed to lift her foot right and couldn't hold the pose. Then came the Walk and Turn test. Gigi didn't walk heel-to-toe as directed and also took the wrong number of steps. Finally, Officer Gargaloni gave Gigi the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. He saw her eyes lacked smooth pursuit. He also saw distinct nystagmus at maximum deviation and its onset before 45 degrees. Vertical nystagmus was not observed. Gigi’s driving was all over the place. The smell of booze was strong. She failed the roadside tests. Police arrested her. Her car got towed because of John’s Law. Officer Gioia drove Gigi to the station. As they got there, Gigi wiggled free from her cuffs. Gioia re-secured them. At the station, he read her the rules. She took a breath test. The test showed she was over the limit. Her BAC was 0.085%. The legal limit is 0.08%. Gigi was processed and then freed. A friend signed a warning about possible issues. He did this for Gigi before her day in court. Officer Gioia gave Gigi tickets.
