He decided to pull the car over near Runnymede. When he approached the driver, he found out her name was Patricia. While talking to her, Officer Gonzalez smelled alcohol and saw other signs that suggested she was impaired. Patricia told Officer Gonzalez that she was driving a rental car. She handed him her driver’s license. He went back to his patrol car to check her information. Since he suspected she might be impaired, he asked her to step out of the car and perform some field sobriety tests. Officer Gonzalez began the assessment with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. Next was the One Leg Stand test. During this test, Patricia struggled to lift her foot properly and placed it down before finishing. The last test was the Walk and Turn. Here, Patricia failed to align her heel to toe with each step, made an incorrect turn, and kept her arms away from her sides. Officer Gonzalez noticed the smell of alcohol on Patricia. She admitted to drinking and struggled to perform the field sobriety tests. As a result, Officer Gonzalez arrested her for driving under the influence. After her arrest, Paneks Towing towed her vehicle for a mandatory 12-hour hold due to John’s Law. Officer Gonzalez then took Patricia to the Essex Fells Police Department for processing. Patricia was at the Essex Fells Police Department when officers read her the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators. She chose not to give breath samples. After they finished processing her, she was released to a neighbor who signed the Potential Liability Warning form on her behalf. As a result, Patricia received several traffic citations: operating under the influence, refusing a chemical test, and not using lighted lamps. On January 18, 2024, Patricia entered a guilty plea for driving under the influence and for refusing a chemical test. As part of her plea deal, the charge for not using lighted lamps was dropped. Because of her guilty pleas, Patricia must have an ignition interlock device in her car for nine months. She also has to attend a program for intoxicated drivers for 12 hours and pay fines totaling $1,130. 3:50 I was having the horizontal gaze 5:07 can people do this without….. 5:08 let’s all finish drunk ladies sentence 7:45 Cop how much have you had to drink? 10:38 Why in the hell 18:43 There is no better use of an officer’s time than arresting drunk drivers.
