It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At 8:49 PM on December 6, 2022, Red Bank Police received a call about a damaged car on S Bridge Avenue, close to the E Sunset Avenue intersection. They approached the driver, 28-year-old Julianna Mike-Mayer. One officer, not having conducted a field sobriety test for some time, requested assistance from a colleague. Patrolman Shane Dengel arrived to perform the sobriety exercises. The first test for sobriety was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. Next, Julianna took the Walk and Turn test, but she struggled to walk straight and didn’t follow the step count correctly. Lastly, she attempted the One Leg Stand test. During this exercise, she swayed her arms to keep her balance and almost fell over. After assessing the damage to Julianna's car and her struggle with the field sobriety tests, Patrolman Dengel arrested her for driving under the influence. He searched her vehicle and then took her to the Red Bank Police Department for a breathalyzer test. At police headquarters, he informed Julianna of her rights as a motor vehicle operator. She was hesitant but eventually agreed to take the breath tests. However, she invoked her Miranda Rights, which meant the officers could not question her about the arrest. The first attempt to give Julianna the Alcotest failed because the officers found alcohol in her mouth. This meant they had to start the 20-minute observation period over and give her the test again. On the second try, Julianna's Alcotest showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.195%, which is more than twice the legal limit of 0.08%. After Julianna took the breathalyzer test, she was photographed and charged with driving under the influence.
