It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At around 2:38 AM on February 18, 2025, Officer McCarthy from the Lakewood Police Department received a call about a woman sitting inside a Kia at the Game On bar at 17103 Detroit Avenue. When he arrived around 2:41 AM, he saw a woman sitting in the driver’s seat of a 2020 Kia Optima. There was also a passenger sitting next to her. Officer McCarthy approached and spoke with the woman, who was identified as 21-year-old Shannon Hayes. Shannon said she and her friend had been playing pool inside the bar earlier that evening. She initially denied drinking any alcohol. After a second officer arrived to assist, Shannon was asked to get out of the car and do some field sobriety tests. The first test was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN). During this test, Officer McCarthy noticed that Shannon's eyes didn’t follow smoothly, and he saw signs of nystagmus at maximum deviation. The nystagmus also started before 45 degrees. Next, they did the Walk and Turn test inside the bar because of snow outside. On this test, Shannon didn’t touch her heel to her toe on each step and made improper turns. The last test was the One Leg Stand. Shannon struggled to lift her foot properly and put it down before the test was finished. Because she appeared to be controlling a vehicle, had a strong smell of alcohol, and admitted to drinking, Officer McCarthy decided to arrest Shannon for Being in Physical Control of a Motor Vehicle. When she was taken into custody, she mentioned she had been arrested for OVI before. She answered a few questions and admitted she drank four shots of green tea liquor that night. Shannon was taken to the police station for more testing. The officer read her the ALS form, and she agreed to give breath samples. Her breathalyzer results showed a BAC of 0.205%, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08%.
