It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: October 16, 2023. The clock read 12:58 AM. Scotch Plains Patrolman Javier Maldonado answered a call. It was a car crash on Sunnyfield Lane. A 2019 BMW 430 was involved. The car had jumped the curb. It hit a tree on the property. Bushes grew around the tree. Airbags deployed inside the BMW. The car’s front end was smashed. The driver was Extania. Patrolman Willie DeJesus helped Extania. She got out of the car on the passenger side. First responders rushed to the scene. Extania was carefully placed on a stretcher. She was moved into the ambulance for evaluation. As she was being moved, Patrolman Maldonado smelled alcohol. He saw other signs of impairment too. After the evaluation, Extania refused to go to the hospital. When asked, she admitted to drinking alcohol earlier. Patrolman Maldonado, suspecting she was impaired, asked her to do sobriety tests. The request came after the first responders finished their evaluation. Patrolman Maldonado began with the Walk and Turn test. Extania struggled with it. She didn't touch heel-to-toe each time. At first, she forgot to count her steps out loud. Next was the One Leg Stand test. Extania also had issues with this one. She did not raise her foot right. Plus, she didn't count in order. The officer skipped the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. The scene reeked of trouble. Extania’s car crash, the booze on her breath, and her failed sobriety test led to her arrest. She was charged with driving under the influence. John’s Law meant her car got towed. It would be held for 12 hours. Patrolman Maldonado cuffed Extania. He took her to the Fanwood Police Department. A female officer searched her there. Extania heard the Standard Statement at the Fanwood Police Department. She agreed to give breath samples. The Alcotest showed a BAC of 0.16%. That was twice the legal limit of 0.08%. After processing, they took Extania to Scotch Plains Police. More processing followed. Finally, her brother arrived. He signed a form for her release. Now, Extania awaits court. Patrolman Maldonado gave her several tickets. These were for DUI, reckless driving, and careless driving.
