It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At 10:49 PM on July 22, 2024, Little Silver police received a call about a car accident. A white 2017 Mercedes GLE had hit a pole on Mitchell Place, close to Oakes Road. Sergeant Stephen Scherer arrived at the scene just after 10:51 PM. He found the Mercedes badly damaged in the front, and the airbags had gone off inside the car. When he spoke to nearby residents, they told him the driver had run away from the accident. Patrolman Andrew White was on duty, searching the nearby streets for a suspect. He found her outside a house on Rumson Road. Sergeant Scherer arrived as White approached the woman. She introduced herself as Melissa. Melissa explained that she was dealing with a divorce and had spent time with a friend that evening. She denied drinking alcohol after the accident but admitted to having some earlier. Based on their concerns about her sobriety, the officers asked Melissa to take a series of field sobriety tests. Sergeant Scherer began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. Next, Patrolman White administered the Walk and Turn Test. During this test, Melissa struggled; she did not touch heel-to-toe on her steps and turned incorrectly. The last test was the One Leg Stand. Here, Melissa couldn’t keep her foot raised properly and set it down before finishing the test. Melissa was arrested after a car accident. She admitted to driving the vehicle and had also consumed alcohol earlier. Her performance in the field sobriety tests was not satisfactory. Following her arrest, her car was impounded for twelve hours under John’s Law. Patrolman White took Melissa to the Little Silver Police Department for processing. At the station, she was given the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators and agreed to provide breath samples. The Alcotest showed her blood alcohol content was 0.16%, which is twice the legal limit of 0.08%. After finishing their process with Melissa, they let her go into the care of a sober adult. This adult signed the Potential Liability Warning for her. Patrolman White then issued Melissa several tickets. These were for operating under the influence, careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and failing to report the accident. 7:30 I'm a mom !
