It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: Just after midnight on November 23, 2024, the Harrison Township Police were called to a crash on Cedar Road near Breakneck Road. A caller reported the accident, and Officer Joseph Fiore arrived first. He saw a 2010 Chevrolet pickup truck that had hit the guardrail and was badly damaged. The front of the truck was wrecked on the passenger side, the front tire was flat, and airbags had deployed inside the vehicle. Officer Fiore spoke with the driver, a 22-year-old woman named Caitlyn. She said her vehicle had “hydroplaned,” which caused her to crash despite dry roads. Sergeant Christopher Cartella showed up shortly after and talked with a witness who had pulled over before approaching Caitlyn. Caitlyn was asked to step out of her truck. She told the officers she was heading home after visiting a friend’s house. She admitted she had been drinking beer earlier that evening. The sergeant saw an open Coors Light inside her car but she claimed she didn't have one. Because he suspected she was drunk, she was asked to do field sobriety tests. The first test was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN). Sergeant Cartella saw that her eyes didn’t follow movements smoothly. There was strong nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the nystagmus started before 45 degrees. Next, Caitlyn took the Walk and Turn test. She failed to touch her heel properly and turned improperly. The last test was the One Leg Stand. She couldn’t lift her foot right and put it down early. Given the crash, her admitting to drinking, finding an open container in her car, and her poor performance on the tests, the sergeant arrested her for DUI. Her vehicle was taken and held for 12 hours under John’s Law. She was then taken to the police station for processing. At headquarters, Caitlyn was read her rights and agreed to give breath samples. The station’s alcohol tester was broken, so she was taken to the Pitman Police Department and tested there. She gave two breath samples at about 2:41 and 2:43 AM, roughly two hours after the crash. Her blood alcohol level was 0.12%, above the legal limit of 0.08%. She was then driven back to the police station and released to a sober adult who signed a liability waiver on her behalf. Caitlyn received citations for DUI, reckless driving, lane violation, and DWI in a school zone. 0:01 RIP headphone users 00:24 Afraid to look at the officer. 16:55 Did she say FMP? or something? 22:43 What noise was he talking about?
