It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At 2:37 AM on August 27, 2021, Deputy Cory Alcantar from the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office noticed a 2013 Honda Accord making an illegal turn near Monroe Street and Stadium Way. He decided to pull the car over, and it came to a stop in the parking lot of the Willow Place Apartments. The driver was identified as 19-year-old A. Hollinger. Ashley handed Deputy Alcantar her registration but did not have her license or proof of insurance. She mentioned that her father is a police officer with the Port of Seattle Police Department. Deputy Alcantar observed that Ashley’s eyes were bloodshot and watery. He also noticed the smell of alcohol on her breath. When he asked how much she had been drinking, she admitted to having three White Claws earlier. Noticing the signs of impairment, Deputy Alcantar offered Ashley a chance to take voluntary field sobriety tests. The first test was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN). Deputy Alcantar noticed that Ashley's eyes did not move smoothly. Next came the Walk and Turn test. Ashley struggled to walk in a straight line, failing to place her heel to toe as instructed. The last test was the One Leg Stand. During this exercise, Ashley did not lift her foot correctly and did not follow the instructions given. After the field sobriety tests, Ashley was asked to take a PBT test voluntarily. The test showed her BAC was 0.051%. Deputy Alcantar decided to arrest Ashley for driving under the influence, as she struggled with the sobriety tests and her PBT result, which is significant for drivers under 21. Ashley was then taken to the nearby Pullman Police Department for processing. Her passenger came along and waited in the lobby with her. After Deputy Alcantar informed Ashley of her Constitutional rights, she chose to waive them and agreed to answer questions. During the interview, Ashley confessed to driving the car while intoxicated. The deputy then read her the Implied Consent Warnings. Once the observation period was over, Ashley consented to take a breathalyzer test. The results showed her blood alcohol content was 0.039%, nearly twice the legal limit of 0.02% for drivers under 21. After taking the breathalyzer test, Ashley was released while waiting for her first court date at Whitman County District Court. She and her roommate received a ride back home. Ashley was charged with Driving under the Influence (DUI) under RCW 46.61.503 since she is under 21. On October 28, 2021, Ashley admitted her guilt to a changed charge related to having alcohol as a minor. She received a sentence of three hours of community service.
