It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At about 4:30 AM on August 27, 2023, SLEO Sean Lucas from the Beach Haven Police was heading home after his shift. As he drove north on Bay Avenue, he saw a white 2016 Honda Civic hit a utility pole on the sidewalk near Kohr Brothers, between Eighth Street and Taylor Avenue. The car then tried to drive away but stopped near Ninth Street and Bay Avenue. Officer Lucas got out and saw the airbags had gone off inside the Honda. Soon, Patrolwoman Ashley Stahl arrived to assist. She approached the driver, a 21-year-old named Taylor, who was also in the vehicle with a passenger. Both wore wristbands from Bird and Betty's. Taylor showed signs of being drunk. Stahl asked her for her driver’s license and registration. She then told Taylor to step out and do some field sobriety tests because of her signs of impairment. The first test was the Walk and Turn. Taylor struggled to touch her heel to her toe on each step. She also took too many steps and didn’t keep her arms at her sides. The second test was the One Leg Stand. Taylor failed to lift her foot properly and put it down before the test was done. The last test was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, which showed signs of intoxication. Because of the crash, Taylor’s admission to drinking, and her poor performance on the tests, she was placed under arrest for DUI. Stahl took her to the police station for processing. Her passenger was given a courtesy ride to wait in the lobby. At the station, paramedics checked Taylor, but she refused hospital care. Stahl read her the standard statement for drivers. Taylor agreed to give breath samples. Her BAC was 0.07%, tested more than an hour after the crash. She might have been over the legal limit at the time. After processing her, officers released Taylor into her father’s care. Her father signed a form accepting responsibility. Taylor was issued multiple tickets. These included charges for DUI, careless driving, failing to report an accident, leaving the scene of property damage, and not having her driver’s registration. Court records show that on November 6, 2023, her DUI charge was dismissed. Her careless driving ticket was changed to reckless driving. She also admitted guilt to failing to report the crash.
