A domestic disturbance call in Amherst, New York turns into a deadly-force encounter when a wanted suspect climbs through a rear window armed with two large knives, attacks an officer, and stabs him before police open fire. The entire confrontation unfolds in roughly six seconds, showing how quickly officers can be forced to transition from less-lethal force to deadly force when an armed threat continues. On July 12, 2025, Amherst Police officers responded to the 4800 block of North Bailey Avenue for a domestic disturbance involving Rayquell M. Grant, who had two active warrants. During the encounter, Grant emerged from a rear window armed with two large knives and immediately attacked an officer. The officer was knocked to the ground and stabbed. A second officer deployed a Taser, but it failed to stop the threat. Grant remained armed, assumed an aggressive stance, refused repeated commands to drop the knives, and continued to present a deadly threat after already stabbing an officer. Both officers then transitioned to their firearms. Grant survived the shooting and was transported for treatment. The injured officer was also treated for two stab wounds to his arm. In March 2026, Grant was found guilty of Attempted Assault in the First Degree and Assault in the Second Degree. He was later sentenced to 15 years in state prison followed by five years of post-release supervision. This case study examines the incident using publicly released police bodycam footage, dashcam video, surveillance footage, cellphone video, 911 calls, dispatch audio, witness recordings, and investigative findings, when available. Analysis and commentary are provided from the perspective of a former federal agent, former law enforcement officer, and digital forensics examiner. Whether you are an aspiring law enforcement officer, a current officer, criminal justice student, attorney, first responder, or simply interested in public safety, these case studies are designed to highlight tactical decision making, officer safety principles, legal considerations, and practical lessons that can be applied to real-world law enforcement encounters. ⚠️ VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED ⚠️ This video contains real police bodycam footage from a critical incident that some viewers may find disturbing.
