NO! >> A DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE CALL TURNS INTO A DEADLY force encounter in seconds when a wanted suspect charges an Amherst police officer with two large knives and stabs him. On July 12th, 2025 at approximately 4:55 p.m. officers with the Amherst Police Department responded to the 4800 block of North Bailey Avenue in Amherst, New York for a domestic violence related complaint. Responding officers were advised that 26-year-old Raequan Grant had two active warrants. When officers arrived, they attempted to make contact with Grant at the residence. We will now go to the body cam video of the officers who responded to the scene. >> Get out of the car. >> There's an officer in the hallway. >> He told me to speak to me. He told me to speak to you. >> Like Raequan Grant is in the house? >> In the house he's not supposed to be in there. >> Okay. >> He placed hands on my knees like a week ago. >> Okay. >> But she left. >> out the window. >> He did? >> Yeah. >> Get on the backside. He's believed to be inside the the premise. We did hear a noise when we first got on location. Don't know if he ran out the back or not. I just put uh Patrol 3 watching the rear of the residence. I'm going to watch the front way till we have more before we do anything else. >> I'm trying to keep him >> John 4, please back to the rear of the residence. Hold on. >> From a tactical perspective, Grant comes through the rear window armed with two large knives and immediately attacks the officer. The officer is knocked to the ground and stabbed, placing him at immediate risk of serious injury or death. The second officer initially deploys his taser, but the taser is ineffective in stopping Grant. Grant remains armed, takes an aggressive stance, and repeatedly refuses commands to drop the knives. Having already stabbed an officer and continuing to present an immediate deadly threat, the officers transition to their firearms to stop that threat. From the moment Grant comes into contact with the officers to the officer involved shooting, the entire encounter only took about 6 seconds, demonstrating just how rapidly the situation unfolded. We will now go to officer two and his body cam perspective. >> Raquel! Zimmer's police. NO! SHOTS FIRED. WE HAVE ONE SUSPECT DOWN. WE NEED TO GET rid We're going to. Don't don't go towards those knives. Get that med kit, John. Stay on coverage. You got You got the med kit? Next officer, we need a med kit in the back. You see it? >> give me a gauze? >> All right. >> I know gauze just wipe the blood off. This might not be enough. >> Yeah, you're going to have to do a seal sweep. >> Yep. >> Get it on there. >> Be careful. I'm not seeing where the bullet wound is. >> I think it's All right, you're good. Let me check it out. Hold on. >> Raequan Grant survived the shooting and was transported to Erie County Medical Center for treatment. The officer who was attacked suffered two stab wounds to his arm and was also treated for his injuries. The Erie County District Attorney's Office later reviewed the shooting and determined that the officer's actions were justified. Under New York Penal Law, Section 35.30, an officer may use deadly physical force when the officer reasonably believes it is necessary to defend themselves or another person from the use or imminent use of deadly physical force. In March 2026, Grant was found guilty of attempted assault in the first degree and assault in the second degree. He was later sentenced to 15 years in state prison followed by 5 years of post-release supervision.
