It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At around 2:40 AM on May 6, 2023, Patrolman Brian O’Keefe from the Holmdel Township Police Department noticed a rented 2021 Volkswagen Atlas driving erratically on Route 34 north near Schanck Road. The car nearly crashed into his patrol vehicle and then hit a guardrail on the other side of the road. He turned on his emergency lights and approached the driver, later identified as Kayla. Upon reaching her, he saw that the airbags had deployed and used a knife to cut the front side airbag before Kayla got out of the car. Once outside, he asked her what had happened. While talking to Kayla, he noticed signs that she might be impaired. Kayla confessed that she had been drinking earlier that night in Asbury Park. An ambulance was called, but Sergeant Christopher Cherney told Patrolman O’Keefe to cancel it since Kayla said she wasn't hurt and didn't want any medical help. Because he suspected she was impaired, Patrolman O’Keefe requested that Kayla take field sobriety tests. Patrolman O’Keefe began the process with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. After that, he moved on to the Walk and Turn test. Kayla struggled to walk in a straight line and could not touch her heel to her toe on each step. Finally, they did the One Leg Stand test. Kayla had trouble raising her foot correctly and relied on her arms for balance. After the traffic accident, Kayla showed signs of being impaired and struggled with the field sobriety tests. This led to her arrest for driving under the influence. Officer O’Keefe took her to the Holmdel Township Police Department for further processing. Once there, he read her the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators, but she refused to take a breath test. After completing the paperwork, she was released to a sober adult and signed the Potential Liability Warning form before her court date. Patrolman O’Keefe gave her several traffic tickets. The charges included driving under the influence, refusing to take a breath test, and consenting to breath sample collection. She also faced charges for reckless and careless driving. Additionally, she failed to keep right on a single-lane highway and did not stay on the right side of the road. Other tickets were for unsafe lane changes, blocking other vehicles, and causing traffic delays. If you enjoyed this BodyCamBust video .
