The car was moving too slowly on Ocean Avenue. He watched the driver swerve over the center line. The car went only 34 miles per hour. The speed limit was 40. He turned his car around. He waited on the shoulder. The Audi then drove past him. He followed the car. Other cars were ahead of it. He finally stopped the Audi. Patrolman Golembieski approached the driver. She was 26 years old. She drove a convertible Audi. He identified her as Ashley. He spoke with Ashley. He smelled alcohol on her. She also showed signs of being drunk. He asked for backup. Patrolman Peter Farmer came to the scene. Golembieski thought Ashley would need to take sobriety tests. He checked her license. He asked where she was coming from. Ashley said she was at Tommy’s Tavern in Sea Bright. She was going to Asbury Park. He suspected she was impaired. He asked Ashley to get out of the car. He wanted her to do some tests. Patrolman Golembieski started with one test. It was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. He noticed her eyes did not move smoothly. They jerke d. They stayed to the side. Her eyes also started jerking before 45 degrees. He saw vertical nystagmus too. The next test was Walk and Turn. Ashley did not step heel-to-toe. She took the wrong number of steps. The third test was the One Leg Stand. Ashley could not lift her foot right. She put her foot down many times. The last test measured Lack of Convergence. Her eyes did not meet on the object. This happened when it moved toward her nose. Her driving, the signs of drinking, and failing the tests led to her arrest. Ashley was charged with driving under the influence. After her arrest, Ashley mentioned her uncle. He was a State Trooper. She said this several times. Patrolman Golembieski gathered her belongings. He put the top up on her convertible. He took her to the police station. Golembieski read her a statement. She agreed to give breath samples. But she was difficult. She tried 12 times. She did not give enough breath. She was charged with refusal. After processing, she was released. Another adult took her. They signed papers for her court date. Patrolman Golembieski gave her tickets.
