Watch this police interrogation with intense raw interrogation from the interrogation room as police conduct a full interrogation of a suspect. This raw interrogation footage captures every moment of the suspect interview, complete with deception detection techniques, and criminal psychology in true JCS style interrogation. 1. The Background Victim: Anita Knutson, 18, a freshman at Minot State University studying elementary education. She worked part-time at a hotel and a mall store and was described by family and friends as kind, friendly, and reliable. Accused: Nichole Rice (then Nichole Thomas), about 19. She worked at a call center and shared a small two-bedroom apartment with Knutson in northwest Minot, North Dakota. Relationship: The two had known each other before becoming roommates. Early on they got along, but the living situation grew strained. Friends reported repeated arguments over everyday matters such as alarm clocks and pet fish. One witness told police she overheard Rice say something like “One way or another, I’m going to get you out of this house.” About a month before the murder, Knutson’s father installed a lock on her bedroom door because of the tension. Rice had a key to the apartment. Alleged motive: Prosecutors claimed ongoing roommate conflicts escalated into violence. There was no evidence of robbery or sexual assault. 2. The Crime Date: Knutson was killed on June 2 or 3, 2007 (most likely overnight into the early hours of June 3). Location: Her bedroom in the shared apartment at 2420 4th Street Northwest, Apt. 5, Minot. Details: She was found face-down on a blood-soaked bed wearing a pink bathrobe. She had been stabbed twice in the chest; the wounds pierced her lungs and heart, causing fatal blood loss. The autopsy showed no defensive wounds and no signs of sexual assault. Weapon: A common novelty folding pocket knife (Fury “Sitting Bull” style) with dried blood was recovered near the bedroom window. Scene: The apartment door was locked. A window screen had been cut in a backwards “L” shape and left on the ground outside; investigators later concluded the cut was staging after the fact and that entry occurred through the front door. Nothing of value was taken—laptop, cellphone, camera, and purse with cash remained undisturbed. An unread text arrived on Knutson’s phone at about 4:55 a.m. on June 3. Discovery: On June 4, after she missed work and stopped contacting family (highly unusual), her father Gordon went to the apartment. With the property manager and a maintenance worker, they unlocked the door after seeing her body through the window. Police arrived around 5:12 p.m. 3. The Investigation Early stage: Several people of interest were examined, including a maintenance worker and a Montana man linked to a similar knife. DNA was collected from roughly 50–60 people. Limited DNA was recovered from the knife; no fingerprints were found on the windowsill. Two black hairs were in Knutson’s hand. No physical evidence linked Rice to the scene or weapon. The case went cold for nearly 15 years. Rice’s statements: She told police she left Minot early on June 2 for her family’s farm near Velva and stayed there until returning for work on June 4. Witnesses later placed her at a bar (the 41 Club) in Ruso on the night of June 2–3, with some saying she mentioned going back to the apartment for clothes. Across multiple interviews her accounts of the weekend timeline, activities, and relationship with Knutson changed. Family statements about her whereabouts also varied. She reportedly failed a polygraph. Later developments: In 2008–2009 two witnesses (an ex-boyfriend and a friend) reported that Rice made drunken statements admitting she “did it” or stabbed Knutson (one account linked it to an alarm-clock argument). Her aunt later testified that Rice discussed crime details that did not fully match official findings. Phone records showed unaccounted-for time gaps. The television series Cold Justice helped re-examine existing evidence. Arrest: March 2022. Rice was charged with Class AA felony murder and released on bond. 4. Conviction and Sentencing Only defendant charged: Nichole Rice. Trial: Began March 18, 2025, in Grand Forks, North Dakota (moved because of heavy local publicity). Lasted about seven days with more than 20 witnesses. Prosecution presented a circumstantial case based on motive, opportunity, alibi inconsistencies, and alleged admissions. Defense stressed the total lack of physical evidence, alternative suspects, and media influence. Verdict: Not guilty on March 26, 2025, after roughly 5 to 5.5 hours of deliberation. Outcome: Rice was discharged immediately. No sentence. She cannot be retried for the same charge. The murder of Anita Knutson remains unsolved.
