On February 8, 2025, Bloomington Police Officer Pavolka stopped a vehicle for speeding at 68 miles per hour (MPH) in a 45 MPH zone. He initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, which was being driven by a 22-year-old woman. Officer Shepard arrived with trainee Officer Schultz. Officer Shepard believed the woman might be under the influence, so Officer Schultz was assigned to run the woman through standardized field sobriety tests. At the conclusion of the tests, the woman agreed to submit to a portable breath test (PBT). The result was 0.077% BAC, just under the legal limit. Despite this, Officer Shepard asked Officer Schultz if he felt the woman was under the influence and when Officer Schultz said yes, she was placed under arrest for Driving Under the Influence. An evidential breath testing device was brought out into the field and the woman provided another breath sample. This one recorded 0.068% BAC. Despite this, the woman was given three citations and was taken to jail. Her case remains open and all suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
