Hello. Ma'am. Hello. Hey. Hello. Ma'am. >> What? >> It's time to wake up and look at me. Ma'am. Hello. You all right? >> Police respond after reports of a driver passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle parked in a public area. When officers arrive on scene, they discover a woman unconscious in the driver's seat and immediately begin checking on her welfare. As officers investigate further, they notice an open container of alcohol sitting in plain view on the front passenger seat, raising concerns that impairment may have played a role in the incident. What begins as a welfare check quickly turns into a full operating under the influence investigation. In this body cam footage, officers work to determine what happened, assess the driver's condition, and gather evidence as the roadside investigation unfolds. Watch the full video as police investigate the incident and ultimately place the woman under arrest for operating a vehicle under the influence. This is Response Unit Body Cam. Real incidents, real arrests, and real police encounters caught on camera. Let's jump into the video. Can you open your eyes? >> Yeah. >> Are you having a medical emergency? What's going on? Hello. All right, please stand with your feet together and arms down at your sides. Okay, do not start to perform the test until I tell you to do so. Do you understand? Do Do what? You're going to be placed under arrest for for driving while intoxicated. >> I want to see you do it, for real. >> It's okay, turn your hands behind your back. >> I want to see you do it. >> Just turn around, put your hands behind your back. >> I'm okay, well, can you call him, please? >> You're going to be under arrest, okay? >> This is the part of the investigation where things start going from concerning to downright difficult to explain. As officers conduct the field sobriety tests, the woman is stumbling, losing balance, and at one point looks more like she's auditioning for a dance recital than walking a straight line. Meanwhile, she keeps challenging the officer to try the tests himself, which is a strategy officers have probably heard more than a few times over the years. The problem is the officer isn't the one being investigated for impairment. The purpose of these tests is to evaluate balance, coordination, and the ability to follow instructions, skills that can be affected by alcohol or other impairing substances. And while the challenge might sound funny in the moment, field sobriety tests are an important part of gathering evidence during an OVI investigation. Unfortunately for her, the results of the tests were doing most of the talking. Let's dive back into the video. >> I'm not even driving. I'm not even driving. I'm not even driving. >> Ma'am. >> Does that even make sense? >> It's 10-41. >> You're good. You're out of here. All right. >> Sorry, can you uh start my hook to location 415? >> Can I ask you? >> Yeah. >> I'm going to double lock them so they don't cinch up on you, okay? >> All right, I got a problem. >> Stay there. Don't move. >> Thank you. >> All right, we're going to walk to this car right here on the passenger side, okay? >> I have my shoes. >> We'll we'll get your shoes. We'll get your phone. Is there anything else you want out of the car? >> Yes. >> What? Well, you're not We'll get it for you. What do you want? What do you want out of your car? >> My shoes. >> Shoes, phone, and wallet anywhere there? >> Yes. >> Okay. Shoes, phone, wallet. We'll get it all. >> I'm going to go in the backseat. Hold on. Is there anything on you? >> No. >> No needles or anything? >> No. >> Your phone? >> Yeah, phone. >> do you have, too? Look like Any shoes, wallet? >> Keys. >> Can you take off your key ring? >> Keys. >> You have a seat in. >> I got a 16-15. Check out. I'm with this hit-and-run at the Target, 650 West Covina Blvd. Color black Mazda was hit while parked. Uh color is parked near the UPS store. Copy that. >> Hello. >> This is your chair. >> All right, come on out. We're going to walk it through here. There's a bench right here on your left. You're going to stand in front of that, okay? I got everything. Good job. All right, can you face the wall, please? I'm going to uncuff you, then we're going to sit on the bench and you can get recuffed to the bench. Do you understand? Lean your hands back a little bit. Sorry. Go ahead and sit on the bench. Show your wrist. >> 26777 >> 26777 >> At the end of the day, this case is a reminder of how dangerous it can be to get behind the wheel after drinking. What started as officers checking on a woman passed out in her vehicle quickly turned into an OVI investigation after they discovered an open container of alcohol and observed signs of impairment. And honestly, challenging the officer to take the field sobriety tests himself while stumbling through them probably wasn't the legal master stroke she thought it was. The officer's job is to evaluate impairment. The driver's job is to demonstrate that they can safely operate a vehicle. The bigger lesson here is simple. If you've been drinking, don't drive. Call a friend, use a ride share, or make other arrangements. It's always cheaper and safer than dealing with criminal charges, towing fees, court costs, and the potential risk to yourself and others.
