On October 5th, 2025, a Sterling Heights police officer working a Walmart detail was advised by loss prevention officers of a retail fraud in progress involving three males. One suspect exited the store and entered a Chrysler minivan while the other two remained inside. The officer, along with a backup unit, waited near the store's entrance to intercept the two remaining suspects as they exited. Let's take a look at what happened. >> HEY, QUICK STOP, PLEASE. As previously mentioned, three suspects were involved in the theft. One suspect remained outside in the getaway vehicle while the other initially exited the store alongside this male. However, with all attention shifting to the primary suspect after he attempted to stab an officer with a screwdriver, the other two suspects were able to regroup and flee the scene in the getaway vehicle. There you go. >> Officers escorted the suspect into an ambulance where he was transported to a nearby hospital for a medical evaluation. One officer suffered a minor injury during the altercation, but did not require any significant medical treatment. Officers followed the suspect to the hospital as he remained in custody. The investigation determined that the three suspects had stolen approximately $236 worth of hygiene products and laundry detergent from Walmart. After being medically cleared, the suspect, identified as Joshua Mills, was transported to the county jail, where he was charged with assault with intent to murder, resisting, and obstructing police and secondderee retail fraud. Joshua was initially given a $500,000 bond and remained in custody. It was also determined that Joshua had allegedly assaulted his wife in East Point earlier that same day prior to the incident shown in this video. As a result, he was additionally charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. Joshua ultimately pleaded no contest to two counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and two counts of resisting and obstructing police. He received sentences of 5 to 20 years for each assault conviction and two to four years for each resisting and obstructing conviction. Pleading no contest means Joshua did not formally admit guilt, but accepted a conviction and sentencing without contesting the charges. These sentences are being served concurrently, meaning they run at the same time rather than being added together. According to Michigan Department of Corrections records, Joshua's earliest release date is April 4th, 2031. Joshua also has a lengthy criminal history. During the incident shown in this video, he claimed to officers that he had attempted to murder a police officer with a knife when he was just 9 years old. In this case, he attempted to stab an officer with a screwdriver, and he was also convicted in connection with the assault involving his wife earlier that day. Despite the seriousness of these incidents, Joshua could become eligible for release as early as 2031. As for the other two suspects who fled in the getaway vehicle, Warren and East Point police pursued the vehicle, but were unable to apprehend them at the time.
