Description

A routine traffic stop for extreme speeding quickly escalates as an officer detects the strong odor of alcohol, leading to an unexpected revelation.

On a May evening, a patrolman observed a vehicle traveling at 85 MPH in a 55 MPH zone, necessitating another officer to intercept the speeding car. Upon approach, officers detected a strong odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle, prompting further investigation. The driver, a 31-year-old woman, admitted to consuming two glasses of wine and disclosed she was pregnant. Based on these suspicions, standardized field sobriety exercises were administered. The driver exhibited multiple indicators of impairment during the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, struggled with balance during the Walk and Turn, and failed to maintain proper form during the One Leg Stand. Consequently, she was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. At headquarters, breath samples confirmed a blood alcohol content of 0.14%. She faced multiple summonses, including operating under the influence, speeding, reckless driving, careless driving, and failure to use lamps when required, before being released to her mother.
