Description

REAL POLICE BODYCAM footage captures a revealing moment during a DUI investigation when a suspect makes a candid admission about drug use affecting basic cognitive abilities. This bodycam video documents a critical field sobriety assessment that provides key evidence for an aggravated DUI arrest.

In this police bodycam footage from December 28, 2024, Santa Fe deputies are conducting a roadside investigation after stopping a vehicle driven by Pamela Moreno for a stop sign violation at the intersection of W Alameda Street and Entrada. As part of standard DUI investigation protocols, officers assess the suspect's mental clarity and cognitive function.

The officer begins with basic questions to establish the driver's education level: "What's your highest level of education?" Moreno responds, "Um, graduated high school." The deputy confirms, "Graduated high school?" establishing a baseline expectation of basic cognitive capabilities. This initial exchange, captured on the bodycam, sets the stage for evaluating potential impairment.

The officer then proceeds to standard cognitive assessment questions: "So, can you count one to 100? And do you know your alphabet?" These fundamental tasks, taught in early education, serve as important indicators of mental functioning during field sobriety examinations. Unexpected difficulty with these tasks often suggests potential impairment.

Moreno's response proves both telling and concerning: "Sometimes." When the officer seeks clarification—"Sometimes? Sometimes. What does sometimes mean?"—she provides a startlingly direct explanation: "'Cause I smoke dope." This candid admission, recorded clearly on police bodycam, directly connects her drug use to cognitive impairment.

The officer restates this connection to confirm understanding: "'Cause you smoke dope, so you don't know how to count?" Moreno reaffirms without elaboration: "I smoke dope." The officer clarifies once more: "So, you don't know how to count one to 100?" This exchange establishes a crucial evidentiary link between the driver's admitted substance use and diminished cognitive function.

According to police reports, this encounter resulted in Moreno's arrest for aggravated DUI after officers observed signs of impairment and conducted Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. She was subsequently booked into the Santa Fe Adult Detention Center without incident.

This police bodycam footage highlights how standard cognitive assessment questions during DUI investigations can elicit unexpected admissions that directly support impairment allegations and provide important evidence for subsequent legal proceedings.
