Description

REAL POLICE BODYCAM footage captures officers discussing their legal justification for questioning a woman found in a vehicle abandoned during a drug trafficking pursuit in La Crosse. This bodycam video documents the critical inter-officer communication that establishes probable cause and the woman's connection to the fleeing suspect.

In this police bodycam footage [39:09-39:41], officers discuss their initial contact with the woman and their basis for questioning her. One officer confirms her direct involvement: "So she, she is part of this, in that that's her vehicle." Another acknowledges: "Yep. So I would associate it that way." This exchange, captured on the bodycam, establishes their legal foundation for questioning based on vehicle ownership.

A third officer inquires about her behavior: "Did she like cause a problem or did you just smell the weed-" The response indicates no resistance: "No," followed by clarification of the timing: "when she pulled up? No." This information, recorded on police bodycam, helps establish the sequence of events and the woman's demeanor.

The officer then explains the woman's actions and their response: "So she went to get in that car or whatever. Cody stopped her." He continues with a crucial detail connecting her to the incident: "Yeah. So she walked back here and Cody, I said, 'Cody, are you good?' He's like, 'Go get that plate off that car 'cause that's the girl- that's who came up here.'" This identification, documented on bodycam, directly links the woman to the operation they were conducting.

The officer then describes detecting evidence of drugs: "Okay. So I just knocked on the window and I could smell the weed. Yeah. And I went to talk to her." This observation, captured on police bodycam, provides additional justification for their investigation. Another officer summarizes: "Easy enough." They confirm the nature of the encounter: "Yeah. So it's more or less consensual then?" with the response: "Yeah. Consensual contact with the smell of-" The final officer confirms her passive state: "Yeah. Literally she was just sitting here."

According to police reports, this February 3, 2023 incident involved 43-year-old Drae Shaun Broadnax fleeing from police during a high-risk traffic stop arranged after an inmate informant provided information about methamphetamine and heroin trafficking. A subsequent search of the vehicle discovered 56.4 grams of methamphetamine, 7.5 grams of cocaine, 5.3 grams of marijuana, and officers seized $1,896 in cash from the woman.

This police bodycam footage highlights the critical importance of officer communication in establishing legal justification for investigative actions, demonstrating how they carefully document connections between individuals and vehicles involved in drug trafficking operations.
