Description

What happens when Atlanta police officers Donald Vickers and Matthew Abad tackle an innocent man, break his ankle in 2019, and then receive highly effective performance ratings? Tyler Griffin's federal civil rights lawsuit exposes a shocking cover-up system.

Here are the Spotlight Moments from this intense legal battle:
- Tyler Griffin suffered a severely fractured ankle requiring emergency surgery, a metal plate, and ten screws after being tackled by Officer Vickers in a driveway.
- Officer Vickers and Officer Abad mocked Griffin as he lay in pain, forcing him to walk on his broken ankle while falsely claiming he was faking the injury.
- Officer Abad bragged about almost shooting Griffin, stating on body camera that he was two seconds away from putting bullets into the vehicle.
- Sergeant Quentin Reese admitted during a deposition that despite the severe misconduct, the department rated Vickers as highly effective.
- Officer Vickers was indicted on felony charges in 2022 and eventually surrendered his law enforcement certification permanently.

This case exposes the deep flaws within police department evaluation systems, showing how serious misconduct is routinely overlooked on official paper. When departments grade bad actions as highly effective, they enable a toxic culture that endangers citizens and shields officers from accountability.
