Description

REAL POLICE BODYCAM footage captures the critical moment when Valdosta Police officers learn the extent of a previous day's theft while confronting the suspect who boldly returned to the same store. This bodycam video documents the information gathering phase that would soon escalate into a violent confrontation.

In this police bodycam footage from December 6, 2022, officers respond to a call from Best Buy employees about a shoplifter who had returned to the scene of his previous crime. As officers arrive at the Norman Drive location, they begin gathering information about what occurred the day before.

An officer confirms with store staff: "She saw all three of y'all saw him shoplift yesterday?" This question, captured on the bodycam, establishes that multiple employees witnessed the prior theft, creating strong probable cause for the current investigation.

When the officer asks for specifics—"Oh, what did he take?"—the response reveals the significant value of the stolen merchandise: "A PS4 with five controllers." This detail, recorded clearly on bodycam, explains why the theft constitutes a felony, as the total value exceeded $921 according to police reports.

There appears to be some clarification as an employee or witness states: "He, he took what..." before the conversation is interrupted. The bodycam then captures an officer instructing someone, likely the suspect Diquone Sears: "Hang tight boss man." When the individual questions this directive—"Who, me?"—the officer confirms: "Hang tight." The subject's initial compliance is indicated by his response: "Yes sir."

This seemingly calm interaction would soon escalate dramatically. According to police reports, when officers attempted to arrest 22-year-old Sears based on the surveillance footage confirmation of the previous day's theft, he physically resisted, struck an officer in the face with his fist, and damaged police equipment during the ensuing struggle.

The incident resulted in multiple felony charges against Sears, including theft by shoplifting, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and interference with government property. Valdosta Police Chief Leslie Manahan later noted that the incident "escalated very quickly" and expressed relief that officers were not seriously injured.

This police bodycam footage captures the deceptively calm moments before a routine shoplifting investigation transformed into a violent confrontation, highlighting the unpredictable nature of retail theft calls.
