A routine disabled vehicle call rapidly intensifies as an officer suspects impairment, leading to a tense struggle during arrest. Around 7:03 PM on May 21, 2023, a sergeant encountered a disabled 2020 Toyota SUV with a flat tire on Shore Road. Upon contact, the driver exhibited slurred speech and an odor of alcohol, then refused to provide identification and later failed multiple field sobriety tests, including the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk and Turn, and One Leg Stand, demonstrating significant impairment by stumbling and attempting to lean on her vehicle. The situation further escalated when the driver actively resisted attempts to be handcuffed following her arrest for driving under the influence, repeatedly being instructed to put her hands behind her back. The officer initiated field sobriety tests, observed the failures, placed the driver under arrest, and subsequently retrieved her documents from the patrol car after she was secured. Her vehicle was impounded, and she was transported for processing, where breath samples revealed a BAC of 0.332%. The individual was issued summonses for operating under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident, before being released to a responsible party. --- Transparency through the lens of the law.
