El Cajon Police released security and body camera footage of an officer-involved shooting that occurred outside police headquarters on Wednesday, December 11. The San Diego Police Department identified the suspect as 24-year-old Benjamin Grube, who was fatally shot outside the El Cajon Police Department after attempting to run over officers with a vehicle. Grube, initially identified by police as Andrea, was a non-binary individual driving a black Toyota pickup truck during the incident. On December 11, El Cajon Police were preparing to host a retirement party at their headquarters. Security camera footage shows Grube entering the police parking lot, pausing momentarily before parking. At one point, Grube is seen walking back and forth between the driver’s seat and the passenger seat of the truck. Nearby, Lieutenant Kevin Maxwell and a sergeant are seen conversing near the entrance to the police headquarters, close to the parking lot. As Maxwell walks past Grube’s truck, the footage shows Grube reversing the vehicle. While the two officers continue their conversation, Grube appears to position the truck before driving toward them, then stopping again. The officers motion at Grube, who then accelerates toward Maxwell. According to police, Maxwell was struck by the truck, thrown into the air, and rolled away as the vehicle crashed into a tree. Despite the impact, Maxwell managed to get to his knees, draw his firearm, and command Grube to exit the truck. The footage transitions from security camera footage to body camera footage, showing Officer Evan Drescher arriving at the scene. By this time, officers had surrounded Grube’s truck. Grube then put the truck in reverse and drove toward Maxwell again. In response, Maxwell and other officers fired their weapons, stopping Grube. When officers pulled Grube from the vehicle, they discovered Grube had doused themselves in gasoline. Additionally, three gas cans were found inside the truck. Officers administered aid to Grube, who was transported to the hospital but later died. Maxwell was also taken to the hospital with a concussion and other non-life-threatening injuries. He was subsequently released. 0:00 - Summary of events 0:14 - Surveillance camera footage 2:28 - Suspect hits officer 3:17 - Bodycam footage 3:25 - Officers shoot the suspect #ElCajonPolice #OfficerInvolvedShooting #PoliceBodyCamFootage #ElCajonIncident #BenjaminGrube #NonBinaryNews #PoliceHeadquartersShooting #SecurityFootageRelease #LawEnforcementNews #CaliforniaPoliceNews Disclaimer: The following content contains graphic scenes of violence that may be disturbing to some viewers.
