On November 8, 2023, Brandon Boyd, a 38-year-old man, was fatally shot by Long Beach police officers following a tense standoff outside a church. The incident began when Boyd himself reported a man with a gun to 911, only for authorities to later discover that he was the armed individual in question. Officers arrived at the scene to find Boyd seated next to a handgun. For approximately 2.5 hours, they attempted to de-escalate the situation, urging him to surrender peacefully. Despite their repeated efforts, Boyd remained uncooperative. Due to Boyd's suspected possession of a handgun in public and his lack of cooperation with officers, SWAT resources were activated and dispatched to the scene. The SWAT team initiated an arrest plan that included the use of a flash bang and less-lethal foam projectiles to subdue Boyd. According to police, after the flash bang and foam projectiles were deployed, Boyd reached behind him, retrieved the handgun, and fired at officers. Several officers returned fire during the exchange. One officer sustained a gunshot wound to the arm, and Boyd was fatally shot.
