On July 29, 2024, Officers with the Cleveland State University Police Department drove up on a disabled vehicle that had apparently struck a light pole. A total of 6 people were gathered in the street and around the vehicle. Officers attempted to interview the 19-year-old woman that they saw exit the driver's seat. However, the other people tried desperately to just take her home. Backup officers arrived, including a sergeant, but that had little effect on controlling the scene. The group of people constantly interrupted the field sobriety tests, including one woman who insisted that she wanted to give the extremely intoxicated woman some food. The 19-year-old was eventually placed under arrest and transported to the University police station. She refused to submit to an evidential breath test. She was charged with Operating a Vehicle Impaired (OVI) and Failure to Control. Her case is still open and all suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
