It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At 12:03 AM on September 2, 2023, Officer Daniel Wynohradnyk from the Montvale Police Department arrived at a crash site on Chestnut Ridge Road, close to the New York state line. The incident involved a 2013 Toyota Rav4 and a 2014 Ford utility truck. Upon reaching the scene, he spoke with Sage Petersen, the 27-year-old driver of the Toyota. Officer Wynohradnyk noticed a strong smell of alcohol. Sage's eyes were heavy, her speech was unclear, and she had trouble standing. There was also vomit on her pants. Sage was told to step out of the car when smoke began to rise from it. The officer asked if she had been drinking. She first said she had three drinks but later revealed the number was actually between five and six at the Pearl River Saloon just across the border in New York. At this point, Officer Robert Klecha and Sergeant Jeffrey Hanna arrived to help. Officer Klecha asked Officer Wynohradnyk if he wanted to handle the DWI case, and Wynohradnyk agreed. Officer Klecha tried to conduct standard field sobriety tests to see if Sage was under the influence. He began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, asking Sage to follow the tip of his pen. Sage struggled to grasp what he was saying. After realizing this, Officer Klecha decided not to continue with the sobriety tests and opted to take Sage to the hospital instead. First responders from the Tri-Boro Volunteer Ambulance Corps arrived to assess Sage's condition. They placed her on a stretcher and decided to transport her to Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey, for more tests. Officer Klecha accompanied her in the ambulance, where she got sick several times during the ride. Upon arriving at Valley Hospital, the officer’s body-worn camera was turned off. Officer Klecha reached out to Sergeant Eric Robalino, who then called Judge Brady to ask for a warrant to take a blood sample. Judge Brady granted the warrant, and the blood was drawn and stored in a sealed container. Later, Officer Wynohradnyk joined Officer Klecha at the hospital. Together, they took the blood samples to the Montvale Police Department. Once at the station, the samples were entered into the Beast system and placed in a temporary fridge for safe keeping. As of September 16, 2023, we are still waiting for the blood test results. Updates will come once the lab finishes its reports. Officer Klecha gave her several summonses, including a court date for the Pascack Joint Municipal Court.
