Police officers responding to reports of an armed man at a bus stop found themselves in a tense confrontation that ended in a fatal officer-involved shooting. At approximately 6:48 p.m., officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police and the Gaithersburg Police Department responded to the 9600 block of Lost Knife Road following a report of a man loading a gun near a bus stop. Officers encountered 46-year-old Elliott Powers, who was reportedly holding what appeared to be a handgun. During the encounter, Powers allegedly racked the slide of the weapon, prompting officers to continue efforts to resolve the situation safely. According to authorities, officers attempted to de-escalate the confrontation and requested additional resources to help bring the incident to a peaceful resolution. Nearby pedestrians were cleared from the parking lot, and surrounding roads were temporarily closed as officers worked to protect the public. Approximately 12 minutes after the initial contact, authorities said Powers raised the handgun in the direction of an officer. Officers from both police departments then discharged their firearms, striking Powers. Once officers determined there was no longer an active threat, they issued commands to cease fire and immediately began providing emergency medical assistance. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel subsequently arrived, but Powers was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that no pedestrians or bystanders were injured.
