A routine traffic stop takes an unforeseen turn when a driver's claims of a panic attack are challenged by visible signs of impairment during roadside testing. On April 22, 2022, a Clearwater Police officer, working an extra detail, was alerted by school staff about a potentially impaired teacher. The officer located a silver 2015 Hyundai driving erratically and initiated a traffic stop, where the driver stated she was distraught and experiencing a panic attack. Despite her claims, officers observed indicators of impairment, leading to a DUI investigation taken over by Officers Miller and Styles. The driver initially resisted exiting her vehicle but eventually complied to perform field sobriety exercises. During these tests, including the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test where she mentioned light sensitivity, the driver exhibited clear signs of impairment, failing to perform the exercises adequately. Subsequently arrested for driving under the influence, a search of her vehicle revealed six bottles of vodka, and her later breath samples registered blood alcohol content levels of 0.311% and 0.305%, nearly four times the legal limit.
