The confrontation, which lasted mere seconds and was captured on surveillance footage, occurred when the officers (members of the Emergency Response Team) pulled their unmarked police vehicle up to a pump adjacent to the perpetrator, Gabriel Wortman, who was sitting in a stolen grey Mazda3. One of the officers observed a noticeable head injury and, recognizing Wortman from circulated photos, quickly shouted a warning to his partner. Both officers immediately exited their vehicle, drew their weapons, and began firing into Wortman's car after they observed him raising a pistol. The shooting brought an end to a rampage that claimed 22 lives across various communities in rural Nova Scotia. The perpetrator, disguised as an RCMP officer and driving a replica police cruiser for much of the attack, had evaded authorities for nearly twelve hours. A public inquiry, the Mass Casualty Commission, later examined the events of the tragedy, including the RCMP's response and the final confrontation.
