On Monday, authorities released edited body-camera footage from officers, surveillance videos from nearby businesses, and additional details uncovered during the investigation. Police first received a call about a man causing a disturbance at a shopping center on the 900 block of North Collins. Witnesses reported the man was kicking trash cans and throwing items. Officers responded but were unable to locate him and subsequently cleared the scene. Approximately 40 minutes later, police were alerted to another disturbance involving a man at a Motel 6 on the same block. Arlington Police Chief Al Jones confirmed Monday that both calls were linked to 34-year-old Edgar Ayala Garcia. Surveillance footage revealed Garcia hiding behind a parked vehicle as a patrol car passed near the motel following the initial call. Later, Garcia was seen at the motel’s rear entrance attempting to break in with a brick-like object. He moved to another door, which he kicked until a guest opened it and allowed him inside the building. Once inside, Garcia proceeded to the third floor, where he was caught on surveillance cameras kicking multiple room doors. Eventually, a guest opened their door, and Garcia forced his way into the room. Police reported that Garcia then pulled out a knife and began fighting with the guest. As the altercation unfolded, Arlington police arrived back at the motel to investigate the disturbance. On the third floor, officers heard someone yelling for help from a room. When officers tried to force open the door, they found the guest bleeding from cuts on his arm. Despite his injuries, the guest managed to open the door while keeping Garcia at bay. Officers said they issued repeated commands for Garcia to drop the knife, but he refused. Two officers opened fire, striking Garcia multiple times. The injured guest exited the room safely. Officers provided first aid to Garcia until paramedics arrived, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after. The guest injured during the fight was taken to a hospital for treatment and later released. No officers were injured during the incident.
