Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) has released body camera footage of a November 19 incident that escalated into a struggle, resulting in the shooting of two officers and the suspect. The footage, combined with bystander video, sheds new light on the event that unfolded in the Smoketown neighborhood near Meyzeek Middle School. Police responded to an anonymous tip about a stolen vehicle on Roselane Street. Upon arrival, officers confronted 19-year-old Jeremiah Thompson as he walked away from the suspected stolen car. After confirming the vehicle was stolen, officers attempted to arrest Thompson. The situation quickly escalated as Thompson resisted, and during a struggle on the ground, a single shot was fired from his handgun. According to LMPD, Thompson was face down on the grass with the firearm beneath him. Officers were unaware that he had a gun until it discharged. The bullet passed through Thompson's wrist and arm before striking Officer Brendan Koerner's hand and Officer Lazman Acharya's leg. Chief Paul Humphrey acknowledged that the direct cause of the gun's discharge—whether Thompson pulled the trigger or if it was accidentally set off during the struggle—is still under dispute. Thompson's attorney, John Olash, claims the gun was triggered by an officer's baton and has accused officers of violating protocols during the encounter. Humphrey, however, emphasized that if Thompson had cooperated, the incident could have been avoided. “Regardless of the semantics, the suspect is at fault,” Humphrey said during a press conference. Following the shooting, officers provided first aid to the injured parties. Both Koerner and Acharya were treated at the hospital and have since been released to recover at home. Thompson is currently in custody at a downtown jail, facing multiple charges, including resisting arrest, receiving stolen property, and first-degree assault.
