The incident, captured on body camera, escalated after Blevins refused to exit the vehicle until Trooper Wright stated he had probable cause to search, and then attempted to video record the interaction upon exiting. Blevins, who stated he felt he was in danger until another officer arrived, suffered a fractured upper back and claims he was unable to comply with commands to put his hands behind his back because of his injury and being incapacitated by the tasing. His attorney, Garry Adams, asserts that Trooper Wright gave commands that he knew Blevins could not follow and that the macing appeared to be an act of torture. The charges of meth and drug paraphernalia initially filed against Blevins were later dismissed. This incident is now at the center of a new federal lawsuit against Trooper Wright. Compounding the controversy, Trooper Wright, who was named Trooper of the Year in 2021, was indicted in March 2025 for allegedly assaulting multiple people and committing perjury, and is currently suspended from KSP.
