On April 20, 2024, Monroe County deputies responded to the Swan Boat Club in Berlin Township, Michigan, after a vehicle crashed directly into a children's birthday party. Two young children were killed, and several others, including adults, were critically injured. The driver, 66-year-old Marcella Chittister, initially told officers she'd only had "one glass of wine" and had passed out behind the wheel. Investigators quickly determined that account didn't add up — her blood alcohol level was scientifically inconsistent with a single drink. Over the course of a lengthy interview, she repeatedly changed her story before eventually admitting to drinking significantly more throughout the day, including stops she'd initially denied. She was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of operating while intoxicated causing death, and five counts of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury.
