A late-night traffic stop escalates as an officer prepares a driver for critical field sobriety evaluations, revealing immediate challenges to compliance. The encounter began when an officer observed a vehicle operating without headlights and erratic driving patterns in the early morning hours, prompting a traffic stop. Upon making contact, the officer detected the odor of alcohol and noted the driver's incoherent responses, leading to the request for field sobriety exercises. During the initial phase of these tests, the officer meticulously explained and demonstrated each procedure, including the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus and One Leg Stand, specifically cautioning the driver not to begin until instructed. He also addressed the driver's footwear, offering a choice to remove boots for better balance. Despite clear instructions, the driver ultimately failed to adequately complete multiple exercises, exhibiting poor balance, incorrect movements, and an inability to follow verbal directions, which led to an arrest for driving under the influence. Subsequent Alcotest results indicated a blood alcohol content double the legal limit. --- Transparency through the lens of the law.
