In this incident out of Belmar, New Jersey, patrol officers respond to a call from a cab driver waiting outside a residence. The driver states he picked up a female passenger from a bar, and she accumulated a $28 fare. After an unsuccessful stop at an ATM, the passenger claimed she had cash inside her house. Instead of returning with the money, she remained inside, prompting the driver to contact law enforcement. Officers enter the home and speak with the suspect, who pretends to search her purse and house for the funds. She eventually admits she deposited all her cash into the bank and cannot pay the fare. The officers place her under arrest for theft of services and a local business interference ordinance. As the arrest occurs, the suspect experiences a mental health crisis and threatens self-harm. Officers immediately coordinate with local EMS to ensure she is transported safely to a medical center for a crisis evaluation. These charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. An arrest is not a finding of guilt: that’s something for a court to decide.
