On December 26, 2023, New Milford Police Officers were called to ShopRite, where loss prevention agents had detained a 23-year-old woman for shoplifting. The woman claimed it was all a mistake. She walked out of the store with a shopping cart full of items because she needed to retrieve her reusable shopping bags from her car. Authorities didn't believe her story and she was arrested for shoplifting. The total amount of stolen items was $144.46. Interestingly, on the way to the police station, Officer Hanikeh asks her if she has ever been arrested before and she admits to a previous shoplifting arrest. Despite this, she was able to plead guilty to an amended charge of Loitering and was only assessed a fine in the amount of $283.00.
