Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, 22, faced serious allegations after a violent attack in late October that shook the West Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago. On Saturday, October 26, at 9:30 a.m., a 39-year-old man was walking to a synagogue on the 2600 block of West Farwell Avenue in West Rogers Park, also known as West Ridge. Without warning, Abdallahi approached and shot him in the shoulder. The victim survived, but the act was later deemed a hate crime, as authorities determined the attack was motivated by the victim’s Jewish faith. When first responders arrived on the scene, Abdallahi allegedly opened fire on them, striking an ambulance. Fortunately, no officers or paramedics were injured in the exchange. Chicago police officers returned fire, hitting Abdallahi multiple times. He was critically injured and transported to Ascension St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. Body camera footage, released later by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), revealed a tense and chaotic series of events. The video shows Abdallahi darting from an alley as officers pursued him down Washtenaw Avenue near Farwell Avenue. The confrontation culminated outside a bungalow at the corner of the two streets. As Abdallahi lay on the ground in a maroon sweatshirt, officers ordered him to place his hands on his abdomen. Despite these instructions, more shots were fired. Officers took cover behind a black pickup truck as bullets flew across the typically quiet residential street, lined with Halloween decorations. Eventually, officers approached the injured Abdallahi, confiscated his firearm, and rendered aid. Abdallahi was initially charged with six counts of attempted first-degree murder, seven counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, and aggravated battery. After further investigation, hate crime and terrorism charges were added. Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling confirmed that Abdallahi had specifically targeted his victim because of his Jewish faith. Following his recovery, Abdallahi was transferred from Ascension St. Francis Hospital to Cermak Health Services, the medical facility at the Cook County Jail, on November 15. Two weeks later, on November 30, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Cook County Sheriff’s staff conducting routine checks found Abdallahi unresponsive. He had attempted suicide by hanging. Abdallahi was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Disclaimer: The following content contains graphic scenes of violence that may be disturbing to some viewers.
