Watch this police interrogation with intense raw interrogation from the interrogation room as police conduct a full interrogation of a suspect. This raw interrogation footage captures every moment of the suspect interview, complete with deception detection techniques, and criminal psychology in true JCS style interrogation. The Background Ashley Young (31) was a Kalamazoo County / Oshtemo Township, Michigan, resident who worked nights and was studying languages with plans to become an interpreter. She had recently ended a long-term relationship and was preparing to sign a lease on a new apartment. Jared James Chance (approximately 29–30 at the time) lived in a Grand Rapids apartment building on the 900 block of Franklin Street. They were prior acquaintances/friends; Ashley had expressed interest in a possible relationship with him. They had a history that included Chance previously breaking into/robbing her years earlier. No clear, established motive emerged at trial. The judge described the killing as completely senseless. The Crime On the night of November 28–29, 2018, Young and Chance were together at Mulligan’s Pub (and nearby Eastown Hookah Lounge) in Grand Rapids. Surveillance footage showed them at the bar; they left after midnight. Young failed to meet her mother the next day to sign the new apartment lease and was never seen alive again. She was killed at or near Chance’s Grand Rapids apartment. Body parts were later recovered there: a female torso (head, arms, and legs removed) wrapped in a bloody tarp in the building basement, plus arms (without hands) and legs (without feet) in a cardboard box on a stairwell landing. Her head, hands, feet, and neck have never been recovered. Evidence of dismemberment and cleanup included a reciprocating saw (later found at Chance’s parents’ home), additional saw blades, ammonia, latex gloves, blood evidence throughout the apartment, and spent .22-caliber casings. The Investigation Young’s mother and stepmother began searching after she missed the lease signing. They reviewed bar surveillance showing Chance with her, contacted him (he gave shifting accounts), and went to his apartment area. On December 2, 2018, neighbor Mario Nelson investigated a strong odor of decomposition in the basement, found the bloody tarp containing the torso, and called 911. Key evidence included Young’s DNA on blood-stained items and tools; surveillance of Chance buying cleaning supplies and discarding her purse; and cell-phone location data placing him traveling toward his parents’ home in Holland, Michigan. A reciprocating saw with human tissue was recovered from under a couch at the home of Chance’s parents, James and Barbara Chance. Investigators determined the parents had assisted their son by transporting items linked to the crime. Conviction and Sentencing Jared Chance was charged with open murder and related counts. In September 2019 a Kent County jury convicted him of second-degree murder, mutilation of a dead body, concealing a death, and multiple counts of tampering with evidence. On October 10, 2019, Judge Mark Trusock sentenced him to 100 to 200 years in prison. His appeals were denied; he remains incarcerated. Barbara Chance was charged with accessory after the fact to a felony and perjury. She entered a no-contest plea to both charges in early 2020. In June 2020 she was sentenced to 45 days in jail, one year of probation, and fines. She has since completed her sentence and probation.
