At approximately 12:20 p.m., officers were dispatched to a home on the 2100 block of South Branch Drive SW after 21-year-old Jerry Baldonado called 911 requesting assistance with a family issue. During the call, Baldonado reportedly told dispatchers that his brother had possessed a gun the previous day. Officer Dominic Sanchez arrived at the residence and announced himself as police multiple times while approaching the front door. According to officials, Baldonado opened the door and pointed what appeared to be a handgun directly at the officer. Believing he was facing an immediate deadly threat, Officer Sanchez fired three rounds. Baldonado was struck in the arm, leg, and abdomen. Authorities later confirmed that the weapon was an airsoft-style BB gun, designed to closely resemble a real handgun. Body camera footage shows Baldonado holding the replica firearm and shifting it between hands moments before the shooting. A woman inside the residence can be heard shouting that the gun was not real, though police have stated that officers did not hear the warning at the time. Baldonado survived the shooting and remains hospitalized while recovering from his injuries. Officials have noted that he has a documented history of developmental disabilities and prior interactions with law enforcement. Records also indicate previous emergency calls in which he allegedly made false claims, including one stating he had been shot. The incident is currently under internal review, along with a multi-agency investigation to determine whether departmental policies were followed and whether any further action is warranted.
