A routine traffic stop quickly reveals a complex situation as a driver's claims of a panic attack conflict with clear signs of severe impairment. On April 22, 2022, an officer on extra duty was alerted to a potentially impaired teacher leaving a school. Locating a silver 2015 Hyundai driving erratically, a traffic stop was initiated. The driver, exhibiting signs of impairment despite claiming a panic attack, initially refused field sobriety exercises but eventually complied. Subsequent tests, including the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus and Walk and Turn, showed significant impairment. After arrest, a vehicle search uncovered six bottles of vodka, and later breathalyzer results at the police department registered nearly four times the legal limit, confirming severe intoxication.
