Two men were pulled over in a vehicle they said they had recently purchased in Mexico. They told officers they were driving from California to Oklahoma to visit their 105-year-old grandmother, who they claimed was sick. While one officer spoke with the men, a second officer conducted a K9 sniff around the vehicle. The K9 alerted to the presence of narcotics, prompting officers to search the vehicle. From there, the two men took very different paths. One cooperated with investigators, while the other stuck to a story that prosecutors found difficult to believe: he claimed the illegal substances were already inside the vehicle when he purchased it. The case eventually went to trial, and he was sentenced to 30 years in prison. The other man, who cooperated with investigators, was allowed to go home.
