Around 1:18 AM on December 18, 2024, Officer Allen Campbell with the Cornelia Police Department observed a silver 2007 Hyundai Santa being driven without tag lights in the vicinity of J Warren Road. He started following the vehicle and activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop. The driver turned into the parking lot of SouthState Bank at 282 Historic Highway 441 North. Officer Campbell exited his patrol car and made contact with the driver, who was identified as 24-year-old Carley Wood. As he was speaking with Carley, Officer Campbell detected a strong odor of alcohol and observed other indicators of impairment. Carley admitted to drinking earlier that evening. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Carley was asked to perform field sobriety exercises after Lieutenant Jeremy Newsom arrived on scene to assist. Officer Campbell started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, and he observed 4/6 indicators of impairment. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Carley did not touch heel-to-toe on each step and turned improperly. The third exercise was the One Leg Stand test. During the One Leg Stand test, Carley failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and put her foot down before the test was complete. The final exercise was the finger dexterity test, and she was unable to count properly. Following the field sobriety exercises, Carley was offered an opportunity to submit to a PBT. The results of the PBT indicated a BAC level of 0.124%, which was over the legal limit of 0.08%. Based on her erratic driving, the odor of alcohol, her admission to consuming alcohol earlier that evening, her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, and he results of her PBT, Carley was placed under arrest for DUI. After placing her under arrest, Officer Franco read her the Georgia Implied Consent Notice at the scene, but she refused to agree to a blood or breath test. Officer Campbell then placed Carley inside the patrol car and transported her to the Habersham County Jail for further processing. She was booked into the Habersham County Jail and issued the following summonses: DUI Refusal (40-6-391) and driving without tag lights (40-8-23(D)) ----------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting our channel (email us for more information).
