On August 17, 2025, Sarasota Police Officer Jones observed a vehicle traveling on the wrong side of the roadway. He initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, which was being driven by a 23-year-old woman. The police report indicates that Officer Jones could smell alcohol coming from the vehicle. The driver was asked to step out of the vehicle and she admitted to consuming alcohol earlier in the evening. She agreed to perform standardized field sobriety tests and was eventually placed under arrest for Driving Under the Influence (DUI). Her 23-year-old passenger was asked to exit the vehicle and take an Uber home. However, she elected to stick around and she was ultimately arrested for Impeding a First Responder. At the Sarasota County Jail, the driver provided a breath sample and the result was 0.173% BAC. The driver was charged with DUI, having a breath alcohol concentration of 0.15% or higher, and driving on the wrong side of the road. On September 17, 2025, she entered the Driver Enhanced Treatment Education Rehabilitation (DETER) program, which will lead to her charges being dismissed. She was placed on 12 months of probation, fined $500, and ordered to perform 50 hours of community service. She was also ordered to install an Ignition Interlock Device on her vehicle, attend DUI school, and attend a Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Victim Impact Panel. The passenger was charged with Impeding a First Responder, but her charge was amended to Resisting without Violence. She signed a Deferred Prosecution Agreement, which will result in the charge being dismissed as long as she performs community service, pays a small fine, and writes a letter of apology to Officer Jones.
