Last month in Torrance, four officers fatally shot a man who refused to stop advancing toward them while holding what they believed to be a knife, according to body-worn camera footage released on Wednesday, Jan. 15. The footage later revealed the man was armed with a screwdriver, not a knife. Prior to the encounter, he appeared to have self-inflicted wounds and was bleeding. Police audio also captured the man — for reasons that remain unclear — calling 911 to summon officers to his location. The individual, identified as 34-year-old Leonardo Diaz of Los Angeles, contacted dispatch around 4:40 p.m. on Dec. 2. He reported that an armed man was in the 2900 block of Oregon Court. In a recording of the 911 call, Diaz identified himself as the armed individual, stating, “I’m gonna shoot somebody. I’m gonna stab somebody.” When the dispatcher asked why, the call either dropped or was disconnected. Attempts to call Diaz back were unsuccessful, police said. Responding officers located Diaz sitting in the driver’s seat of a green Dodge Charger parked on Oregon Court. Body-camera footage shows officers repeatedly instructing him to roll down his windows, fully open his door, and keep his hands visible. Diaz partially opened the door and briefly looked back at the officers before pulling the door closed again. Officers, believing he was holding a knife and noticing his apparent injuries, requested less-lethal resources over dispatch audio. However, it is unclear from the footage whether such resources were available or used at the scene. Despite officers' repeated commands to drop the object, Diaz exited the vehicle holding the screwdriver and began walking toward them. Officers ordered him to turn around and get on the ground, but he ignored their instructions, the footage shows. Four officers then fired their weapons, striking Diaz. Even as he fell to the ground, officers continued to instruct him to drop what they thought was a knife, as shown in the body-camera footage. After the shooting, officers administered medical aid while contacting Torrance Fire Department paramedics, who pronounced Diaz dead at the scene. 0:00 - Preview 0:09 - Description of events 0:25 - The suspect calls 911 01:00 - Dispatch call 03:19 - Bodycam footage 05:53 - Police shoot the suspect 06:23 - Drone footage 6:53 - Police rendering aid to the suspect #TorrancePoliceShooting #OfficerInvolvedShooting #LeonardoDiaz #PoliceBodyCamFootage #TorranceNews #CriticalIncident #UseOfForce #PoliceResponse #BodyWornCamera #ScrewdriverIncident #SelfInflictedWounds #911CallRecording #LawEnforcement #PublicSafety #TorrancePoliceDepartment Disclaimer: The following content contains graphic scenes of violence that may be disturbing to some viewers.
